Autism Symposium
Enhancing the Speech/Communication Skills of Individuals with Autism within Appropriate School-based Programs
The T. K. Martin Center for Technology and Disability at Mississippi State University will host a two day symposium, July 30 & 31, 2008, titled Enhancing the Speech/Communication Skills of Individuals with Autism within Appropriate School-based Programs. Participants will learn how to design an appropriate school- based program for a student with autism which simultaneously addresses the core deficits of autism (communication and socialization) and relevant learning objectives from the Mississippi Curriculum Frameworks. This symposium is appropriate for teachers, speech language pathologists, occupational therapists, administrators, and parents. CEUs, ASHA CEUs and SEMIs will be offered. The following learning objectives will be addressed:
After participating in the 1st Annual Autism Symposium participants will:
- State the characteristics of autism
- Identify the key components of an autism assessment and relevant intervention plan
- Design classroom for instruction
- Discuss the use of visual supports
- State the underlying principles for communication intervention
- Describe effective intervention strategies that promote communication/social skills
- Describe intervention utilizing speech generating devices
- Design activities and materials
- Collect and analyze evaluation data
- State relevant portions of the Individuals with Disabilities Education Act
